For the fourth time in as many years,  Waldport High School’s forestry program took home the Oregon Future Natural Resource Leaders (FRNL) state championship! The 15 team competition was held on April 21 at Oregon State University and April 22 at Brooks Historical Society.

Waldport Junior Trae Vandehey won overall forester after taking first place in log scaling and compass and pacing. Vandehey earned third place in map reading and sixth place in both cable splicing and timber cruise to clinch the win.

Though victorious in the end, Vandehey said the day of the competition started off rough for him. “Last year, I got first place in cross cut,” he said. “This year, I got disqualified because my cut didn’t go all the way through. It was one of the first events of the day and it bothered me but I was able to get back from that which was great.”

After earning second place in plant identification last year, sophomore Jasmine Carlson won first place in that category this year and fifth place in demonstration speech. “I really pushed hard to get first this year,” Carlson said. “It really paid off.”

Carlson credits Waldport forestry advisor Jeff Skirvin for the team’s success. “Skirvin pushes us to go out and practice over and over.” She also acknowledged the Waldport Booster Club and the community support for giving the team the equipment they need to practice.

Out of the 31 Waldport students who competed this year, seven earned first place awards and 22 placed in 20 events. Several students placed in multiple categories earning Waldport a total of 56 places overall. Waldport also took all six place finishes in timber cruise.

State champions in individual categories included:

• Trae Vandehey, compass and pacing, log scaling, and overall forester;
• Eli Spangrund, power buck;
• Hunter Postma and Eli Sprangrunt, crosscut;
• Jasmine Carlson, tree identification;
• AJ MacFarlane, timber cruise; and
• Kiana McNeil, tool identification.

In overall team placings, Waldport won with 225 points followed by Sweet Home with 146 points. LaPine came in third with 18 team points. Congratulations Waldport!

The Oregon Future Natural Resource Leaders is a career technical student organization dedicated to the support of high school students interested in pursuing education or careers in natural resources or forestry.

Fue una de las primeras pruebas del día y me molestó, pero pude recuperarme, lo que fue estupendo”.

Después de obtener el segundo lugar en la identificación de plantas el año pasado, el segundo año Jasmine Carlson ganó el primer lugar en esa categoría este año y el quinto lugar en el discurso de demostración. “Realmente me esforcé mucho para obtener el primer lugar este año”, dijo Carlson. “Realmente valió la pena”.

Carlson le da crédito al asesor forestal de Waldport, Jeff Skirvin, por el éxito del equipo. “Skirvin nos empuja a salir y practicar una y otra vez”. También reconoció al Waldport Booster Club y el apoyo de la comunidad por dar al equipo el equipo que necesitan para practicar.

De los 31 estudiantes de Waldport que compitieron este año, ocho ganaron premios de primer lugar y 22 colocados en 20 eventos. Varios estudiantes colocados en múltiples categorías ganando Waldport un total de 56 lugares en general. Waldport también tomó todos los seis lugares en madera crucero.
