Superintendent Update – June 10, 2020

Posted on June 10, 2020

Dear LCSD Family,

I hope that everyone is staying safe and healthy.

We all had quite a shock when it was announced Sunday that there were 124 positive cases of Covid from the local seafood plant. Also a shock that 95% of the cases had no symptoms. That’s the tricky part of this thing-people don’t know they have it. This prompted a response from the district Monday by closing the district down for 2 days – Monday June 8th and Tuesday June 9th. No one was allowed into school buildings or offices and sadly, no meals were delivered. The county gave a briefing Monday at 1pm and our district leadership met to decide what to do next.

We decided to re-open our school buildings to staff on an appointment basis so staff could get things they needed and drop things off Wednesday June 10th to Friday June 12th. Starting Monday June 15, and hopefully, nothing new happens, staff can come back to schools and offices following ALL of the safety and health rules.

Wednesday June 10th the Summer Lunch Program starts. More details below.

The Graduation and Promotion Activities across LCSD were fantastic!! Congrats to all the graduating seniors and their families. It was fun just seeing people!!

Here are some details about what is happening in the District:

  1. Summer Lunch Program. Starts Wednesday June 10 and goes through the summer. It serves children ages 1-18. The sites are: Oceanlake, Sam Case, Crestview, Siletz and 6/10 to 6/17 Toledo HS and 6/18 Toledo Elementary. Service is curbside only and everyone MUST wear a mask and have their passenger window open and ready for delivery. No one may get out of their cars.
  2. Dropping off Chromebooks and Library Books. If you have already done this, thank you. Unless you are moving or have some other reason to not have one, all students we gave Chromebooks to may keep them over the summer. If your school had a time for materials to be brought back to school and it was canceled this week, please watch your school’s websites for new days and times to drop off computers and library books. The schools will also post times you can come and get your things from the school if you have not already done so.
  3. Return to School in the Fall Planning. The Oregon Department of Education is providing school district superintendents guidance tomorrow on what we need to do and be ready for in order to think about having school on site in the Fall. Your LCSD executive leadership team (and after that, school admins too) will be designing Fall Education and getting the Plan approved by the Board and out to the public as soon as possible. It will NOT BE UNTIL mid July. Most people I have spoken with want school in person and they also want it to be safe for children and staff. We have some great ideas and we will consider some of the mathematical modeling information we have received about the optimum number of kids at school in the best configurations and using the best health and safety and cleanliness practices. Frankly, I cannot wait to get to planning!!
  4. Summer activities to come. The Speed and Agility camps at the high school fields are still getting ready to open June 15th but we must have an OK from ODE which we are waiting for. We have communications ready to go in case this cannot happen BUT we are very hopeful. Please use the Summer Resources links provided in last week’s newsletter and watch your school’s websites and FB pages for summer academics, athletics and activities if we become able to plan and have these. There will be summer Credit Recovery and some very limited summer school for some kids.

PLEASE READ TO YOUR KIDS THIS SUMMER. REVIEW NUMBERS AND DO SOME CRITICAL THINKING EXERCISES WITH THEM. IT WILL MAKE A LOT OF DIFFERENCE TO HOW THEY COME BACK TO SCHOOL IN THE FALL. LOVE AND LAUGH AS MUCH AS YOU CAN!

STAY 6 FEET APART
WASH YOUR HANDS AT LEAST 20 SECONDS – OFTEN
SNEEZE OR COUGH INTO YOUR ELBOW
WEAR A FACE COVERING/MASK AS OFTEN AS YOU CAN – THIS IS VERY EFFECTIVE
IF YOU FEEL SICK STAY HOME AND CALL YOUR DOCTOR
BE CAREFUL NOT TO BE IN CROWDED SPACES ESPECIALLY WITH THINGS OPENING

Sincerely,
Karen Gray
LCSD Superintendent

Sinceramente,
Karen Gray
